Piazza Armerina
Piazza Armerina is approximately 130km from Taormina.
This ancient medieval town, surrounded by greenery, is famous for its historic centre and the Aragonese Castle and Cathedral, its spectacular “Palio dei Normanni” and above all its breathtaking “Villa Romana del Casale”.
This huge villa dating from the third century AD is of great interest for its still intact mosaic flooring which covers almost the whole floor area.
The most famous mosaics are those depicting “Lovers”, “Circus Animals” “Sporting Events” and “The Labours of Hercules”. Morgantina, a Sicilian village colonised by the Greeks and containing some important ruins lies just 16km away.
Caltagirone, one of the capitals of Italian pottery is also nearby and is home to some baroque monuments, a famous staircase decorated with tiles and a museum of pottery.
